Connecting corridors: Airoli–Katai link & Kolshet creek bridge -

Two major infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are reshaping connectivity: the Airoli–Katai Link Road and the Creek Bridge at Kolshet–Thane. Spearheaded by MMRDA, these projects promise faster travel, reduced congestion, and stronger integration of industrial and residential hubs.

The Airoli–Katai Link Road, spanning approximately 12.3 km, is being developed under the Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project. Designed to cut travel time from Airoli to Palava to just 20 minutes, the corridor will significantly decongest traffic between Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan–Dombivli. As of April 2026, nearly 80 percent of the work has been completed, with Phase 3 construction now underway. Elevated sections, freeway stretches, and interchanges are being built to ensure seamless movement, and the project is expected to become a lifeline for commuters and industries in the region.

The Kolshet–Kalher Creek Bridge in Thane is another critical link, intended to reduce travel time between Thane and Bhiwandi to just 7 minutes. The bridge, measuring 1.64 km in length with a 23.6 m width, includes a 1,175 m viaduct and 465 m ramp. Initially tendered in 2024, the project faced alignment challenges, leading to cancellation of the earlier contract. MMRDA has since reissued tenders, with surveys and preparatory works currently in progress. Once completed, the bridge will provide a direct connection between Kolshet and Kalher, bypassing congested routes and supporting industrial growth in Bhiwandi.

Both the projects are both progressing are being overseen by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Both projects are critical to easing congestion and improving connectivity across Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, and Bhiwandi.

Together, these projects underscore MMRDA’s role in driving regional integration, reducing travel bottlenecks, and supporting the economic expansion of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
